U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday announced a major international rescue effort named “Project Freedom,” aimed at evacuating nearly 23,000 civilians from 87 countries who are reportedly stranded in the Persian Gulf amid rising tensions involving Iran.
Speaking during a White House press briefing, Rubio made strong allegations against Iran, accusing it of engaging in what he described as acts of “piracy” in the region. According to him, numerous commercial vessels along with their crews have been unable to leave the waters for over two months, creating a serious humanitarian situation.
Rubio stated that thousands of innocent civilians—including sailors and crew members from across the globe—have effectively been left trapped at sea. He emphasized that these individuals are not part of any conflict but are instead victims of escalating geopolitical tensions and what he characterized as deliberate obstruction by Iranian forces.
He further explained that the situation goes beyond ordinary criminal activity. While acknowledging that such actions are clearly unlawful, Rubio described them as “desperate and destructive,” suggesting a broader pattern of aggressive behavior. He stressed that these ships and their crews are currently at the mercy of what he repeatedly referred to as piracy, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Adding to the urgency, Rubio claimed that several of these civilian vessels have already faced hostile encounters, including incidents where ships were fired upon and subjected to what he called “senseless attacks.” These developments, he argued, have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty for those stranded at sea.
Rubio also drew parallels between the current situation and Iran’s internal actions, alleging that the same regime has previously taken harsh measures against its own citizens. He suggested that the trapping of international crews reflects a broader pattern of behavior, describing it as a form of hostage-taking carried out simply because Iran has the capability to do so.
“Project Freedom,” as outlined by Rubio, is intended to serve as a coordinated international response to safely evacuate those stranded and restore freedom of navigation in the region. While specific operational details were not disclosed, the initiative is expected to involve collaboration with allied nations to ensure the safe return of affected civilians.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East, with global attention increasingly focused on maritime security and the safety of international trade routes. Rubio’s remarks signal a strong stance from the United States, framing the situation not only as a regional crisis but also as a matter of global concern requiring immediate action.
